Craig Rothwell

Craig combines his engineering experience and legal knowledge to help his clients understand intellectual property and to gain protection for their products.

Craig is a member of AJ Park’s manufacturing and mechanical team, and works with his clients to secure patent and design protection for their products. He works with a variety of clients, from entrepreneurs and start-ups to large businesses across a range of industries, including building and construction, healthcare, the primary industries, and manufacturing. It’s a role that sees him dealing extensively with not only the New Zealand and Australian patent offices but also overseas patent offices including Europe, US, Canada, South America, Japan, Korea and China.

With a Bachelor of Technology in engineering and automation from Massey University, Craig spent a decade working as an engineer, first in the steel industry in New Zealand and then in the subsea oil industry while based in London and Aberdeen.

Returning to New Zealand, Craig was ready for a career change. Always having been interested in intellectual property (IP), he contacted AJ Park and was subsequently invited to join the firm in 2007.

Craig qualified as a registered patent attorney in 2010 and worked to complete his law degree part-time at The University of Auckland, completing his law degree in 2015.

Working style

Craig enjoys working alongside other experienced IP practitioners at AJ Park and with a variety of clients across various industries.

Determination, tenacity and a methodical approach are hallmarks of his working style. The combination of a strong engineering background together with many years practising as a registered patent attorney gives Craig the ability to understand a client’s technology and how best to go about protecting that technology, whether by patent, registered design or trade secret.

Beyond work

Craig is married and has two young children. If he has a spare day, you’ll probably find him unwinding with a spot of fishing or diving.
