Jonathan Higgs

Jonathan is a patent specialist based in our Auckland office.

Expertise

A self-described ‘jack of all trades’, Jonathan is a senior associate at AJ Park, working as a patent attorney in the firm’s Auckland engineering and IT team. He specialises in manufacturing and mechanical engineering. The majority of his clients are New Zealand companies, mostly operating in the healthcare sector. Jonathan acts on their behalf to instruct firms all over the world, including Europe, China and the United States.

Experience

After gaining a degree in product development (BTech) from Massey University, Jonathan joined a small patent attorney firm in Palmerston North, learning the ropes under the guidance of an influential and inspiring mentor.

In 2002, he moved to London and joined one of the UK’s leading firms of chartered patent and trade mark attorneys helping clients in all areas of pre and post-grant procedures. He qualified as a European Patent Attorney and Chartered Patent Attorney (UK) and gained significant experience in the UK and European patent systems.

During his 15 years in the UK, Jonathan appeared before European Patent Office opposition divisions and boards of appeal in Munich and The Hague to present opposition and appeals cases; a true test of a patent expert's ability to remain calm under pressure. Cases are often conducted in several languages via simultaneous translations, with the results decided on the day, meaning attorneys must react instantly to the decisions handed down.

Working style

Approachable and conscientious, Jonathan enjoys dealing with sensible people with realistic expectations.

What keeps me particularly interested in my job is the satisfaction of completing a piece of work, especially when it seems complex at the start, but by getting into it and unravelling it, you can produce a great result for your client.

It’s vital, he says, that inventors understand the golden rule of patents:

“Do not disclose your idea in public until you have spoken to an IP professional about your options.”

Outside of work

While he might spend his work day in a suit and tie, after hours Jonathan enjoys his passion for music, playing the guitar and screaming lead vocals in the heavy metal band Monsterworks. While gigs with his London band mates are no longer an option, they still record new material to add to the more than a dozen albums the band has produced to date.
