Scott Blowers

Scott practices in all areas of patent law for mechanical and manufacturing technologies.

Expertise

Scott is a registered patent attorney and qualified mechanical engineer. Part of AJ Park’s mechanical and IT patents group in Auckland, he practices across a range of patent law areas, particularly those relating to mechanical and manufacturing technologies.

Most of Scott’s clients are local manufacturing businesses involved in the production of agricultural technology and marine products, and building equipment and components for the construction industry.. He’s also helped Les Mills International protect its innovative exercise equipment around the world.

Scott most enjoys projects that require combining his specialised legal knowledge with his comprehensive understanding of engineering principles. While helping clients achieve their commercial outcomes, Scott relishes the opportunity to learn about new areas of technology and the client’s innovations.

It’s gratifying to see someone’s business grow faster, fend off competitors more effectively, or be better rewarded for hard work and innovative thinking, because of the strategic advice and legal assistance I’ve been able to offer them.

Experience

Before joining AJ Park in early 2015, Scott worked in both engineering consulting and product manufacturing roles. He has a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) from the University of Auckland and is currently completing his Bachelor of Laws alongside his work at AJ Park. During his final year of engineering study he undertook a full-year research project for Fisher & Paykel Appliances, working with the company’s product development team on innovations in suspension dynamics for washing machines.

Working style

Personable, a structured thinker, analytical and very driven, Scott believes the most successful working relationships are founded on mutual trust and respect.

“As an attorney, I believe you can be most effective and efficient when you have a relationship where your clients feel they can rely on your professional opinion, and trust you to provide the best advice and options for them. And establishing a relationship like that first requires an equal measure of respect from the attorney for the client’s knowledge of their own business and their planned commercial direction.”

Scott works well with those who are down to earth, have a sense of humour, and are clear and open about their commercial objectives. Understanding a client’s broader business and commercial context, beyond just their intellectual property, is very important to him. He admires people with a social conscience who want to make a tangible difference.

“I love working on anything that contributes to improving people’s lives or making the world a better place – even if that’s in a small way. Anything that ends up doing more than just contributing to somebody’s bottom line carries extra reward for me.”
