Abhijeet is a patent and registered design expert in AJ Park’s Auckland engineering and IT team. He specialises in mechanical, electrical/electronics and software technologies, and has worked with a number of healthcare device manufacturers. He also has extensive experience with startups, and particular expertise in medical technologies and the digital technology sphere. Abhijeet has an engineering degree in mechatronics (a blend of mechanical, software and electrical engineering), where he focused specifically on automation, control and robotics.
Abhijeet first joined AJ Park in 2008 and after four years he moved to Australia where he worked initially at a Sydney-based patent attorney firm assisting clients in the healthcare sector. He then joined Cochlear Ltd as in-house patent attorney working with the firm’s Sweden-based and Belgium-based research units. Abhijeet has recently returned to AJ Park after a secondment to Fisher & Paykel Healthcare as an in-house patent expert where he supported various business units and managed substantial patent and design portfolios. He also has experience conducting freedom to operate searches, assessing and managing IP risks and developing and executing IP strategy.
A self-professed ‘tech geek’ Abhijeet enjoys diving deep into his clients’ technology. Open, friendly and approachable, he likes to collaborate with clients, working to become a trusted advisor and part of their team. He has huge respect for those who invest their mental capital and financial resources into developing new innovations.
There are so many exciting new technologies – that’s one of the great things about being a patent attorney, you get exposed to some incredible ideas. It’s amazing how clever people are. I love seeing what our clients and their competitors are up to. Intellectual property is constantly evolving, and as technology keeps moving forward the law has to change to catch up.
In 2010, Abhi was awarded the NZIPA Council prize for the best overall performance in the demanding New Zealand Patent Attorney exams. Through grit and hard work, he passed his exams in just two years, rather than the standard three or four, all while working full time.
Beyond the office
A keen sportsman, Abhijeet plays cricket and is heavily into Brazilian jujitsu. The mechanics of the sport, with its levers and pivot points, appeals to the engineer in him, as does the use of strategy and timing to beat one’s opponent – not to mention the discipline and training the sport demands. Abhijeet also volunteers at a local youth group where he mentors young people.
