Brook Dyer

Patent Attorney

AJ Park IP Limited, Auckland

Brook applies his critical-thinking and problem-solving skills to maximise his clients’ intellectual property protection.

Working in AJ Park’s engineering and IT team, Brook conducts patent searches and assists with drafting patent specifications and prosecuting patent applications. He also advises clients on patentability, freedom to operate and infringement issues.

Brook enjoys the variety of AJ Park’s clients and the different areas of technology his work exposes him to. Equally satisfying is the opportunity to focus on different aspects of patent protection.

I’ve always been interested in science and technology, and I love that my work brings me into contact with new technologies at a very early stage of their development. Working alongside inventors throughout the development of these products is fascinating and really gives you a sense of how much goes into getting a new product to market.

Before joining AJ Park in late 2015, Brook worked in the engineering team at Molemap, helping design, prototype and test new technology for imaging lesions and melanoma.

His degree in robotics and computer-systems engineering gave him wide-ranging exposure to technology so Brook is quickly able to get to grips with new inventions and ascertain where he can best add value.

Brook also studied business, majoring in innovation, entrepreneurship and commercial law. This combination of degrees has given him skills in communication, collaboration and critical thinking, as well as technical and legal aptitude.

Working style

Organised and curious, Brook loves learning and problem-solving, and is always up for a challenge. He believes communication is the key to successful working relationships.

'The patent process can be long and drawn out. Our clients’ needs can change over time, so we like to work alongside them throughout the patent process rather than simply acting on their behalf.'

Beyond work

Outside of the office you’ll find Brook swimming laps, reading sci-fi or working his way through a TV series. He enjoys music and almost all sports, but actively plays and follows tennis, golf and football.
