Hamid Hamandi

Patent Executive

AJ Park IP Limited, Wellington

With his mechanical engineering background, Hamid brings a practical, hands-on approach to his role as a patent executive in AJ Park’s engineering and ICT team.

Expertise

Hamid uses his specialised professional knowledge to analyse and advise on the patentability of inventions, technology and services. An important facet is considering the commercial viability of the inventions that are brought to him. He enjoys understanding the nitty-gritty details of how an invention works and then applying his legal skills to ensure that the innovation is well protected.

“Inventors play a vital role in our economy. Their work helps keep New Zealand at the forefront of technology and industry worldwide.”

Hamid’s clients range from start-ups and inventive entrepreneurs through to New Zealand companies looking to take their technologies global. What binds them together is a can-do spirit to pioneer creative and innovative technologies. “A real challenge many of them share is understanding how the patent system works and the steps they need to take to effectively synergise their patent protection and their product development together.”

He also regularly assists overseas clients in advancing their patent portfolios within New Zealand and Australia.

Hamid works under the guidance of registered patent attorneys.

Working style

Hamid believes transparency is critical.

People need to understand the true potential of the idea they have poured their energy and time into. They also need to know the risks, costs and obstacles that they may face. You cannot sugar-coat the complexities and the competitive landscape. Establishing and communicating those complexities, and the best means of protection based on the client’s needs, is critical to building trust and rapport.

Experience

Hamid has experience in 2D and 3D CAD (computer-assisted design) modelling, CAM (computer-assisted manufacturing) programming and CNC (computer numerical control) manufacturing. This working knowledge of the software means he has a very hands-on approach to developing, designing and manufacturing solutions, as well as protecting them.

Beyond work

Outside of work hours, Hamid enjoys creating digital art, working on cars, hiking and exploring.
