Commercialisation specialist, Kit Horsley, also has experience in trade marks and IP strategy. His clients include a variety of local and international businesses from start-ups through to large exporters.
As a member of AJ Park’s commercial team, Kit helps clients across a range of industries to commercialise their intellectual property. His role includes drafting, advising on and negotiating commercial agreements, including intellectual property licences and assignments and collaboration, manufacturing and distribution agreements.
Prior to joining the commercial team in mid 2016, Kit worked in AJ Park’s trade mark group where his clients ranged from small start-ups to large exporters. He now helps clients at the early stages of their business process, and enjoys the satisfaction of seeing them bring their products and ideas to market.
‘I love how enthusiastic and invested start-ups are, but it’s also amazing to see what larger New Zealand companies are achieving as they take their products to the world.’
Kit gained valuable insight into business operations through a secondment with New Zealand manufacturer, Sistema. Over the course of a year, he worked with Sistema’s management helping the company navigate decisions around its IP portfolio and strategy.
My time with Sistema was extremely beneficial. I became familiar with the internal workings of the business which has helped me understand the challenges and opportunities that my other clients may face.
Kit studied law and politics at Otago University, finishing his degree in the Czech Republic via an exchange programme that enabled him to study international relations at the University of Economics in Prague. On returning to New Zealand in 2014, he completed his professional legal studies course and joined AJ Park. Kit is currently studying towards his patent attorney qualifications.
Friendly and approachable, Kit is popular with clients who appreciate his enthusiasm and ability to see the big picture. While he’s happy to go with the flow, he likes to work in a structured way with well set-out goals.
Kit frequently returns to Wellington and the Wairarapa where he grew up to visit his parents, and he enjoys waterskiing on Lake Tarawera during the summer. International travel is another of his passions, and having seen the wonders of Petra and Jerusalem, Eastern Europe and Russia are now high on his must-see list.
