AJ Park IP Limited, Auckland
A patent attorney in AJ Park’s chemistry and life sciences team, Nora assists clients seeking to protect their innovations in the areas of biotech, life sciences and pharmaceuticals.
With a BSc in medicinal chemistry and a PhD in chemistry, Nora is well placed to help clients seeking patent advice for innovations in the areas of biotech, life sciences and pharmaceuticals.
A member of AJ Park’s Auckland chemistry and life sciences team, she joined AJ Park in August 2014, initially working as a search and science writing specialist for the team. Her role saw her mainly carry out freedom-to-operate, patentability and watching searches. Nora now focuses more on patent drafting and prosecution.
Seeing all the amazing and diverse areas of chemistry AJ Park’s clients are operating, I’ve come to realise how vast a field chemistry really is. From food products to new medicines, agricultural products and even chemical inventions that cross into engineering, I love the wide variety of work I get to do. It keeps things exciting!
Before joining AJ Park, Nora completed her PhD at the University of Auckland, where her research involved the synthesis of analogues of the lamellarins, a family of compounds with promising anti-cancer activity. While her research was interesting, Nora realised lab work wasn’t her long-term calling and is delighted to have made the move into intellectual property.
A career highlight in 2017 has been passing her patent attorney exams, which she describes as ‘on a whole other level’ from the numerous exams she sat during her eight years at university.
Given her background in medicinal chemistry, Nora enjoys working with other researchers and companies specialising in the fields of synthetic and formulation chemistry. Patent prosecution is one of her favourite aspects of the job, as she relishes the opportunity to devise a solid argument against examiners’ objections.
Nora also appreciates the collaborative environment at AJ Park where she can work as part of a team, sharing knowledge and expertise with her colleagues.
I really think what sets AJ Park apart is the people. Everyone is just so nice and helpful. You really feel a sense of community working here and it’s great to be part of that.
Driven and with high personal standards, Nora credits her parents for modelling the solid work that she’s adopted. But while work is important to her, she also enjoys spending time with friends and family, and loves to travel.
