Sam joined AJ Park’s Wellington chemistry and life sciences team as a patent attorney in March 2019.
While intellectual property (IP) can be both complex and technical, Sam is committed to undertaking the problem-solving and abstract thinking needed to provide clients with practical advice.
A key aspect of Sam’s role is to prepare, file and prosecute patent applications in New Zealand and internationally. He enjoys deconstructing complex situations in order to identify the IP options available.
Sam also handles patent restorations and related extension of time applications, and assists AJ Park’s litigation and dispute resolution team with contentious life sciences matters.
Sam enjoys both the variety of challenges and the collaborative nature of the work.
“On any given day, you’re working with people from various backgrounds, countries and industries, with different needs and aspirations. It’s critically important to take the time to really understand their key goals and to develop strategies to help them achieve a positive outcome.”
The benefit of doing that from New Zealand, he says, is that we have a relaxed and open-minded approach to how we work. He believes that here, there is less emphasis on process for its own sake and far greater inclination to find a way forward with a modern solution.
Sam came to AJ Park from the Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand (IPONZ), where he began working as a patent examiner while studying towards his law degree. During that time, he completed the qualification to become a registered patent attorney in New Zealand and Australia.
Sam completed graduate and post-graduate qualifications in organic chemistry, including research projects in the synthesis of purine pathway transition state analogues as potential anti-malaria compounds and the synthesis of naturally derived macrocyclic lactones (zampanolide, the labillarides and aigialomycin D) for medicinal research. These projects gave him experience at various stages of the drug discovery process.
Outside of work, Sam keeps busy with his young family. His main hobbies revolve around music, from enjoying old favourites to going to gigs and playing guitar. He’s also always keen on discovering new outdoor hobbies.
