Gareth Scarfe

Gareth applies his rare mix of broad IP expertise and first-hand business experience to helping his clients define and achieve their business goals.

Expertise

With his rare mix of broad intellectual property expertise and first-hand business nous, Gareth is perfectly suited to helping clients protect their brands and other IP, both in New Zealand and abroad.

Gareth currently works primarily with large New Zealand-based corporates, preparing and filing trade mark applications in Australasia and internationally, and prosecuting them through to acceptance. He also adds value to their businesses by advising on trade mark clearance, applications, prosecution and registration, and opposition.

Achieving legal solutions that improve the value of his clients’ businesses gives him the most satisfaction.

“Intellectual property is a business asset, so you need to invest in it strategically with a clear vision of how it will increase the value of your business.”

Experience

Given his background in biochemistry and interest in law and business, it’s no surprise Gareth was drawn to specialise in intellectual property.

Gareth first joined AJ Park in 1998, with a degree in biochemistry from Otago University and an LLB from Victoria University. After nearly four years at the firm’s Wellington’s office, he moved to London and gained another five years’ IP experience, initially in patents and then in trade marks.

An exciting opportunity to establish and run a manufacturing business in Melbourne brought him back Down Under; and successfully navigating that new company through the challenges of the GFC is one of Gareth’s proudest achievements. It also gave him valuable business experience and first-hand knowledge of the issues his clients face.

A desire to return to intellectual property saw Gareth take up an in-house IP role in Auckland with a multinational manufacturing company, and ultimately returning to private practice with AJ Park in early 2017. He now works in the firm’s Auckland office as a trade mark executive where he enjoys the greater level of client engagement and the closer involvement in the daily activities of his clients’ business.

Beyond the office

Gareth divides his spare time between his young family and renovating an old villa. When his boys get older, he’s looking forward to ditching the paintbrush and lacing up his hiking boots so they can get out in nature and perhaps climb the odd mountain together.
