John has extensive experience managing trade mark portfolios and advising on branding strategies.

John is our chairman of partners and has practiced as a patent attorney since 1975. John joined AJ Park as a partner in 1999. John is a trade mark strategist with extensive experience managing trade mark portfolios and advising on branding strategies for a wide range of clients from individuals through to large multi-nationals, both in New Zealand and overseas. John also bases himself in the firm's Sydney office where he carries out business development for AJ Park's growing Australian practice.

John is involved with:

John has led a number of high profile projects including a foreign filing programme and strategic brand re-positioning exercise for Les Mills International Group, and implementing a compliance programme to prevent the SELLOTAPE and GLAD WRAP brands becoming generic. He has also prepared strategic plans to protect the NAVMAN, MAINFREIGHT and CYCLOPOWER brands both in New Zealand and overseas.

In 2017, John was featured in the World Trademark Review (WTR) 1000 rankings. The publication described him as 'a favourite of internationally minded brand owners' and noted that he 'routinely acts for heavy-hitters such as Time Warner Inc and Les Mills International Group'.  

John was also acknowledged in the Chambers Asia-Pacific 2017 guide as being highly skilled in trade mark matters, and recognised by peers and clients alike as 'the statesman of IP in New Zealand: a fantastic practitioner' and 'well-respected and loved in the profession'.  

In 2016, John was listed by Asialaw as a market-leading lawyer in intellectual property. He was also listed in Managing IP's IP Stars as a 'well-known trade mark strategist' who is 'highly regarded in the market for his capability in managing trade mark portfolios at home and abroad'.  

John has regularly been voted by his peers as one of the Global Highly Regarded Individuals in the International Who's Who of Trademark Lawyers. He regularly presents at ICEHOUSE (a New Zealand business incubator group) owner-manager seminars on all aspects of intellectual property.

In 2013, John was selected by peers for inclusion in the Fifth Edition of Best Lawyers in New Zealand, in the practice area of intellectual property.

John writes regularly for New Zealand and international publications.  He has attended overseas conferences including INTA since the mid 1980s.

In 2002 John was awarded a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellowship. John is a founding member of IP Trek. IP Trek is a group of intellectual property lawyers who go on adventure hikes around the world.
