Laura Carter

As a litigation expert, Laura advises clients on contentious trade mark, patent, and copyright matters. Her clients range from SMEs to some of the world’s biggest brands and innovators.

About Laura

Friendly, hardworking and approachable, Laura has a reputation for being a safe and conscientious pair of hands. As a litigation expert, she advises clients on contentious trade mark, patent and copyright matters, as well as other tricky issues clients face in the IP space.

'Litigation can become an issue at any time for any business. How the business navigates and manages that challenge can make a huge difference to the amount of time and resources it takes, and its outcome. I really enjoy litigation because it involves the most interesting issues-the things that are worth fighting about.'

While relishing the challenges her job brings, Laura also loves learning from experienced colleagues.

'Working for the market leader, with some of the best IP lawyers and litigators in practice, is the best learning environment I could ever have hoped for. We have an amazing client base. On any given day I'm working with the world's and New Zealand's biggest brands and innovators, and that's a real privilege.'

Cases and clients

Laura works with a wide range of clients, instructed either through their external lawyers or in-house counsel, or directly with owners of small and medium-sized businesses. Because their understanding of the law and issues varies, each requires a different approach. What doesn't change, though, is the trust that's essential to a successful working relationship with all of her clients.

Among her most memorable cases was The Coca-Cola Company v Frucor and PepsiCo trade mark infringement case around the shape of the Coke bottle.

'I arrived at AJ Park at just the right time to be part of this interesting and challenging case. To be working on protection of one of the world's most valuable trade marks has been an extraordinary opportunity.'

It's not enough for our trusted outside counsel to be at the top of their legal game; they need to bring more to the table than just legal advice. Laura does this-in spades. I find her to be creative, practical and, most importantly, a passionate advocate for her clients.
