Victoria Watts

Victoria brings her international experience working in London and Paris to her role advising clients on all aspects of trade mark and related intellectual property law.

Victoria is a barrister and solicitor and registered patent attorney who advises clients on all aspects of trade mark and related intellectual property law. She has experience in working with clients from a range of industries, from cosmetics and toiletries, to food and beverage, and computer software.

She enjoys the fast pace of the work, and the fact that she quickly gets to see the results of her input into the development of a specific product.

A client can come to me with an idea for a trade mark and once I’ve confirmed that it’s available to use and register, they may decide go ahead and launch. It’s often not long before I see that product advertised on billboards and in the shops. It’s really satisfying to have had a hand in getting it there.

English-born Victoria studied law in France and Germany (she’s fluent in both languages), and did her training contract at Nabarro Nathanson in London and Paris. Before moving to New Zealand, she worked at Baker & McKenzie in London in the firm’s trade marks unit and also dealt more widely with IP litigation and contracts.

Victoria maintains strong links with the French law and business communities. She has held key positions on the board of the French New Zealand Chamber of Commerce.

She first joined AJ Park in September 2005. After taking time out in early 2013 to have her third child, she’s now back at the firm working in a job-share arrangement with another senior associate.

Working style

Friendly and approachable, Victoria is a skilled multi-tasker who likes to perform at her peak. She gets huge satisfaction from helping her clients achieve their business goals by understanding their offering and working with them to maximise value from the IP they have created.

Victoria particularly enjoys working with professionals who appreciate the importance of IP, and see it as a core part of their business assets. She also appreciates working with her highly skilled and business minded colleagues at AJ Park.

Beyond work

Travel – both in New Zealand and abroad – is one of Victoria’s great passions. She also loves spending time with her family, which includes both running around after little ones, and enjoying food and wine with her Kiwi in-laws. She is a keen golfer but, as a mum of three, opportunities to indulge in this hobby are limited!
