PatentsPatents protect new ideas which are able to be industrially applied. Not all new ideas are inherently patentable inventions, but most new ideas are capable of protection by a patent, provided that a mode of putting the idea into effect has been developed. An application for a patent must be lodged before there is any public disclosure or use of the idea. Patents can be obtained in New Zealand and in most other countries. Defining the general field of the invention to extend a broad net
around its application, while capturing the essence of its form and
function, is the art of patent drafting. An intimate knowledge of the
technology is essential to ensure sufficient protection is provided in
a patent specification. The patent teams' knowledge in their specialist
area of patents means we can liaise competently with inventors to
develop lateral solutions to protect even the most innovative
technologies.
