Expertise

A registered patent attorney and qualified barrister and solicitor, Corinne Cole advises clients in the areas of trade mark creation, strategy and ownership issues, as well as copyright, domain names and advertising. Her clients are predominantly start-ups and small to medium-sized businesses. While Corinne works with a very diverse client base, she has a particular interest in the cosmetic and skincare, fashion, and viticulture industries.

‘I love seeing my clients’ passion. My best days are when I get out of the office and visit them at their premises. It gives me a better idea of their overall strategy and focus. It’s incredibly satisfying when clients involve me right from the beginning and through the gestation of their brand or service. I get to help them not only navigate the world of intellectual property (IP) but also to align that with their business objectives.’

Working style

Corinne particularly enjoys collaborating with clients and their branding agencies to guide them through the nuances of trade mark law and ensure the marks they choose can be registered and defended, if necessary. She believes that having robust conversations early on in the branding process results in the best outcome for her clients.

Approachable and honest, Corinne favours a realistic approach. She likes to clearly spell out potential difficulties or issues, lay out the most cost-effective and achievable strategy, and build an environment of trust.

We get excellent service from AJ Park and have a very close relationship with them. We've focused on protecting ourselves in markets we're likely to move into. For a consumer goods company like Whittaker's, your brand is your biggest asset.

Community involvement

Outside of work, Corinne invests much of her time and energy into numerous governance roles. She is president of the council of the New Zealand Institute of Patent Attorneys (NZIPA). In the past she’s been chair or a board member of Dress for Success, The Young Enterprise Trust, Daffodil Enterprises Limited, Life Flight Trust and Footnote Dance—organisations she continues to support.
