Andy Yu

Associate \ AJ Park IP Limited, Wellington

Andy combines his experience in technology with his training in mechatronics and business to assist clients seeking to patent their innovations.

Expertise

Andy works as an associate in the engineering and IT team. He carries out patent searches for patentability or freedom to operate. Andy’s role also involves analysing patent examination reports and responding to examiner objections when necessary.

While relatively new to intellectual property law, Andy is a keen and fast learner with a rapidly growing knowledge of the patent process. Curious and methodical, he likes to carefully consider and understand a problem from multiple angles to find the best solution.

I really enjoy representing and advocating for our clients’ inventions by thoroughly understanding the value and benefit their innovations bring. It’s fascinating to see so many different inventions from a variety of technological fields, to understand them and see what makes each invention unique.

Experience

Prior to joining AJ Park in 2018 as a patent executive, Andy worked in technology firms in New Zealand and Taiwan. He was a member of the electrical design team for Mimomax, a firm that manufactures radio systems. While with Appro Tech, he was part of the quality assurance team, testing the capabilities of internet protocol cameras. Andy has a degree in mechatronics engineering, a field that deals with electrical, software and mechanical concepts. It’s this specialist knowledge that lets him quickly come to grips with the new inventions and technologies he comes across; while his degree in business, majoring in marketing, gives Andy a broad understanding of how organisations operate and the variables that contribute to organisational performance. Andy’s degree in business also gives him a basic understanding of finance and economics concepts.

Beyond the office

Outside of work, music is one of Andy’s passions. He plays several instruments and enjoys listening to a wide variety of musical genres, learning music theory and producing music. When he’s not doing that, you’ll find him hiking, cooking or hanging out with friends.
