James is an Associate in the Auckland Engineering and ICT team.
Experience
James advises clients on patent and design protection, particularly within the mechanical and ICT sectors. He also offers guidance on freedom to operate (FTO), conducts IP due diligence, and performs patent searches. His specific expertise spans medical devices, pneumatics, construction, consumer products, software, and electronics. James values close collaboration with his clients and engaging with their technology to allow for the best intellectual property (IP) protection.
Expertise
Through his Bachelor of Engineering (Electronics and Computer Systems) James was able to develop skills in CAD modelling, programming, mechatronics, embedded electronics, and computer vision algorithm design. James has experience as an engineer at a Wellington-based firm specialising in power substation equipment. His multifaceted role included testing, technical documentation, software development, and customer support. He found fulfilment in the diversity of tasks and responsibilities, and collaborating with colleagues to create practical products that people rely on.
The opportunity to work with a wider range of clients attracted him to the field of IP. He’s completed his Master of Intellectual Property and is enthusiastic about engaging with cutting-edge technologies and utilising his skills in technical writing and customer interaction, which align with his previous experiences.
Outside of work
In his spare time, James is a passionate musician. He has completed grade 5 in performance piano and currently sings in the Auckland Youth Choir. In addition, James is a keen runner and tramper and has completed three half marathons and eight of New Zealand’s ten great walks.
