Dr Jake Stuart
Associate \ AJ Park IP Limited, Auckland
Jake is a patent associate in AJ Park's Chembio team. He helps clients to secure patent protection in various aspects of life sciences, with a special interest in pharmaceuticals and biochemistry.
Experience
Drawing on his technical expertise in chemistry, molecular biology and pharmacology, Jake helps his clients navigate the patent process for their life sciences innovations. His practice involves advising clients with their IP strategy, patentability and freedom-to-operate searching, drafting patent specifications and prosecuting patent applications.
He works with a vast range of local and international clients from universities and multinationals through to smaller biotechnology companies and start-ups.
The aspect of his practice that I most enjoy is engaging with inventors to transform their hard work into IP assets.
Expertise
Jake graduated from the University of Edinburgh with First Class Honors in 2018, and completed his PhD in synthetic organic chemistry in 2022 after being awarded a scholarship. During his research Jake worked on the synthesis of numerous natural products, isolated from plants and fungi. Examples of this work can be found published in high impact-factor scientific journals.
Jake dedicated a significant portion of his PhD to teaching chemistry and innovating instructional methods. It was through this that he developed a passion for simplifying and communicating complex topics and processes, which translates well to intellectual property. Jake joined AJ Park in 2022 and registered as a trans-Tasman attorney in 2024.
Beyond work
Outside of the office Jake enjoys watching and playing cricket. He is also interested in ancient history, film and travelling (particularly to capital cities).
