AJ Park Law Limited, Auckland
As a search analyst in AJ Park’s chemistry and life sciences team, Kenneth conducts patentability and freedom to operate searches, and provides support to the firm’s other patent teams.
Kenneth joined AJ Park’s chemistry and life sciences team in early 2016 as a search analyst. His role involves conducting patentability and freedom to operate searches for AJ Park clients, such as Fonterra and University of Auckland, in the area of life sciences (microbiology, genetics, biochemistry). Kenneth also provides support to the other patent teams as required.
Kenneth has an exciting and varied background and believes working in intellectual property (IP) is a great way to bring all of these strands together.
Kenneth studied molecular biotechnology at Otago University and subsequently worked as a research assistant there. He expanded his knowledge by studying marketing management and then completed a law degree. In addition to his studies, he completed summer internships at Mayer Brown (Beijing and Hong Kong) and Temasek Lifesciences Laboratory (Singapore).
‘While I’ve always had a personal interest in IP and science and technology, my interest in pursuing a career in law and IP was sparked by an AJ Park attorney who delivered a fascinating lecture on IP protection in the new product development process.’
Kenneth says a career highlight has been having his research contributions published in three scientific publications, including Methods in Molecular Biology. The research team he was part of investigated the potential of using antibody-containing milk to minimise microbe damage to voice prostheses used by laryngectomy patients. Kenneth’s honours dissertation investigated the use gene therapy methods to potentially disrupt melanoma cells. He hopes his work has contributed to the knowledge base and helped others conducting related research.
Curious by nature, Kenneth is a keen learner and enjoys experiencing new things.
The aspect of my job I enjoy the most is learning new things and being able to contribute to the success of our clients. I relate well to open-minded people who are willing to think outside the box. I believe that we never stop learning and my parents taught me the importance of constantly challenging myself and being adaptable to change.
Outside of work, Kenneth loves meeting new people, travelling and experiencing different cultures while sampling exotic cuisines. He’s also a passionate follower of motorsports, particularly Formula One.
