Lawrence Wong

Patent Executive

AJ Park IP Limited, Auckland

Lawrence is an ambitious and enthusiastic member of AJ Park’s Auckland electrical and IT team. He loves helping Kiwi companies navigate the IP landscape so they can achieve their business goals.

Expertise

Since 2016, Lawrence has worked as a patent executive for AJ Park’s Auckland electrical and IT team. Much of his work focuses around medical devices, computer software and electrical-based technology, and he also has experience in product development, digital signal processing, and control and automation.

Lawrence loves the intellectually stimulating nature of his job and the fact that it requires him to contribute his own original thinking and analysis. He enjoys working with local clients, especially those that come up against big multinational competitors, where he can help a Kiwi ‘underdog’ compete in the global market and punch well above its weight. Although just starting his career in IP, Lawrence is proud and excited to be part of a team navigating clients through the IP system both in New Zealand and overseas.

My work also has a global element, which I love. It requires us to be on top of the IP law updates that occur all around the world, and we have to work closely with patent attorneys overseas to help our clients apply for overseas IP protection.

Working style

A driven and ambitious problem-solver who enjoys figuring out the big picture, Lawrence is analytical, resolute and willing to dig his heels in when things get tough.

Among the elements he believes are essential for a successful working relationship is clear communication so that clients can see that he’s made the best effort on their behalf.

Experience

Lawrence gained first class honours for his undergraduate engineering degree, which he completed in three years instead of the usual four. He then gained an ME (also with first class honours) in electrical and electronic engineering. Before joining AJ Park, he held a summer research position at the Australian National University, interned at Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, and worked as a systems engineer for a diary automation company.

Beyond work

In his spare time, Lawrence enjoys reading (usually non-fiction and biographies—there’s always a bit of wisdom you can glean from others’ life stories, he says). He also likes tramping, and working out at the gym doing HIIT (high intensity interval training).
