William McGrath

Trade Mark Executive

AJ Park IP Limited, Wellington

Will, a trade mark executive in our Wellington office, conducts trade mark searches and files trade mark applications for clients of all sizes based both in New Zealand and overseas.

Will joined AJ Park’s Wellington office in January 2017, where he works as a trade mark executive. His role currently involves dealing with New Zealand trade mark applications and searches for overseas clients or filing applications at international trade mark offices for New Zealand-based clients. The companies he assists range from small local start-ups through to multinational organisations.

Will studied law and arts (majoring in economics) at the University of Otago and his role at AJ Park is the first of his professional career. Initially studying philosophy, politics and economics (PPE), he switched to law and economics and quickly realised it was the perfect fit for him. Despite just starting out in the field of intellectual property (IP) law, Will is enjoying being thrown in the deep end and taking on new professional challenges.

I’m particularly drawn to IP strategy, and it’s fascinating to see what new marketing initiatives are coming up for companies that are registering in New Zealand.

Not afraid to give anything a go, Will is outgoing and easy to get on with. While studying in Dunedin, he was heavily involved in student activities, hosting a programme on the university radio station for two years, working as catering assistant at the University of Otago Union, and directing the University’s Capping Show, a comedy theatre show held during the graduation season. In 2011, Will spent a year as junior housemaster at the Oratory School in Berkshire in the United Kingdom.

Beyond the office

Originally from the Hutt Valley, Will is enjoying being based in Wellington with its great arts and music scene.

In his spare time, he enjoys getting out and about in the scenic Wellington city and regions. As part of his most recent endeavour he ran a half marathon, raising money for Lifeline Aotearoa.
